Bringing something special to you.
My love of animals captured on paper.

Tess Dawson is a fine artist,
who creates portraits in watercolour or pencil, that convey an emotional connection that’s captured through her unique, realistic style for those who want an endearing and soulful heirloom to treasure for years to come. She does this through her use of colour, depth and texture especially focusing on the eyes, which have been said to be “the windows to the soul.” She depicts not only the likeness but also the essence of who she is creating the portrait of.
MY STATEMENT
Art found me during lockdown—a time of uncertainty that led to an unexpected passion. With only basic materials and distant memories of my O-level art classes, I immersed myself in watercolour painting and drawing, relearning techniques through tutorials in solitude. That period of exploration became the foundation for my artistic journey, giving me the confidence to move beyond instruction and create work that is truly my own.
My art is rooted in realism, but it’s more than just likeness—I strive to capture the warmth, emotion, and essence of my subjects. Every portrait begins with the eyes, as they hold the soul and spirit of the individual. That initial connection is what breathes life into my work, allowing me to pull out the depth of personality in each piece. Through careful attention to tone, shadow, and layering, I shape each face with love and intention, ensuring that every detail contributes to the overall emotion of the portrait.
I believe that learning never stops, and each new piece is an opportunity to experiment and refine my craft. Whether working with watercolours or pencil, the process itself is what drives me—the joy of watching a portrait emerge from the page and the happiness it brings to those who receive it. My work is often described as “realism with heart,” a reflection of the care and dedication I put into every stroke.
Now based in Cornwall, I continue to explore and develop my artistic voice, always seeking new ways to deepen my connection with my subjects. My portraits are not just representations; they are moments of connection, warmth, and storytelling—an invitation for the viewer to feel the presence of the person behind the portrait.
